There is a weird and beautiful synergy going on between Japan and Scandinavia; Japan, for some reason, is wildly in love with Scandinavian design. There are books about Swedish, Finnish, and Norwegian artists and designers, Stig Lindberg, Olle Eksell, and others, that are published only in Japanese, and available only on Japanese websites, like Flaska, or Biotope.biz.
Even Lotta Jansdotter (who, sadly, has abandoned San Francisco for Brooklyn) has lifestyle books out in Japan that have never been published in English.
I covet these books. I sometimes I go to Amazon Japan and, if Google translates for me, I can figure out that clicking the button called "You insert to the cart" adds it to my shopping cart, and "Explanation of the commodity is indicated entirely" means "more details" (I love translated English!). I've never tried to work out the price with a currency converter and feel my way through ordering from Amazon Japan though; it seems too fraught with obstacles.
Here are some lovely sites with pretty pictures Lotta Kuhlhorn, Flitiga Myran Rorstrand, Form &Design, and Wonderwall. And some design blogs: The Scandinavian Designmouse, Karin Eriksson.
And while we're on the subject of great Scandinavian design, Ikea is now selling gorgeous fabric.
