At work, our group gets a box of fresh, organic fruit on Monday to last us in snacks through the week, (so much better than bagels). Sometimes the fruit isn't quite ripe on Monday so you have to wait a day or two. (I like bananas when they have just turned yellow, no green left - but at soon as they get one freckle, it's all over, so there is about a ten minute window most weeks when I can eat one. I also think bananas are tastier mashed up with a fork than eaten from the skin. Mashing releases the sugars or something.)
Anyway, one Monday I chose a pear and brought it back to my desk. I decided to draw it each morning until it was ripe enough to eat, so that's what I did for four days. It was a good exercise in seeing, and patience.
Here is day one. Ironically, it looks the ripest here because I wasn't yet really looking at the pear. I just saw that it had some brown and went a bit too heavy with the brown pencil:
Day two is a little better. At least I notice the colors more. I should mention that all I have at work are horrible Crayola pencils that a coworker gave me when she moved to London. Crayola is no Prismacolor, so I did the best I could:
Day three, the shape is looking better. More like a real pear and not just the idea of a pear:
Day four is easily the best. I had been ignoring this seam of green running down the brown part, and today I attempted it. I feel like on the fourth day, the pear and I had become friends:
Then I ate it and it was delicious!
