Sindy's 1972 -1976 Wardrobe

Oh I love the Internet. I was daydreaming about my favorite doll growing up: Britain's answer to Barbie - Sindy, and I decided to see if I could find images of the outfits I had for her when I was young. I found EVERYTHING!

I remember these clothes, the feel of the fabrics, and I can see exactly how each garment fastened. I played with this doll constantly between the ages of 6 and 10, and I would probably still play with her now.

I believe it was Christmas of '72 when I got my first Sindy. She had one leg slightly shorter than the other. Here is a story I wrote for Victoria. I am holding that Sindy. (I can see that it was after I washed her hair and ruined it.)

I got several outfits too that first Christmas, including this stylish coat:

And, Oh!, the "Theatre Time" outfit. I loved this one. It was a skirt and overdress (which also looked great on its own.)

More Theatre Time. I remember one of the little gold buttons on the dress fell off.

 

For my birthday the following year, I got this adorable yellow pinafore and printed shirt:

And a silky blouse with culottes. So au courant!

 

I spotted this career girl skirt suit in a store in Waterford when we were there on a day trip from Wexford. I set about begging my mother to buy it for me. I cried and pleaded and begged and cried, and eventually I wore her down. 

We drove home from Waterford, the whole family. None of the others had been bought anything, and they were glaring at me. My parents were angry. 

I got the outfit, but I felt ashamed and I never resorted to those tactics again.
 

This blue dress was a favorite. I wanted one that would fit me.

The last clothes I got for Sindy were these mix 'n' match separates. After that I lost interest in her, and moved on to other things, like books, and boys, and swimming. 

I kept all the clothes and the dolls in a little black and white circular suitcase for years, until my niece Leigh discovered them, and who knows what happened to them then. It's so great to see these now. Hello Sindy.

thanks for the trip down sindy lane! i discovered a skipper doll in a junk shop a number of years ago and i went hunting for all my old barbie stuff. i still had much of it! and lots of clothes but i destroyed some (now valuable) outfits and hair by cutting dresses off and making them minis or bobs for long-haired barbie and friends. my sister and i played together for hours and years with ours. good memories in that...

Those dolls look great. Bratz should learn a thing or two from the Sindy dolls about looking hip yet respectable instead of trashy. It's sad that those kinds of dolls are the ones being played with by the younger generation now.
